Shelving and Bookcases
Originally conceived as part of the architecture, bookcases became detached in the 17th century while still maintaining their architectural pedigree. Columns, consoles and rich carvings were added over time.
Usually viewed as a permanent decorative feature along a wall, contemporary uses of bookcases still have an architectural character as realized in England, culminating in the masterful designs of Chippendale, the Adams and Hepplewhite bookcases.
