Hepplewhite Furniture Style (1765-1820)
Of the late Georgian Period, George Hepplewhite gave his name to a distinctive style of light, elegant furniture that was a more simple version of earlier French styles. Hepplewhite pieces usually have straight legs (square or tapered) and often have reeded or fluted edges ending in a spade foot. Reproductions of his designs continue to this day.
Considered one of the "big three" English furniture makers of the 18th century, Hepplewhite is credited with popularizing the sideboard and short chest of drawers. His designs for these pieces typically feature serpentine or bow-shaped fronts. He is also noted for creating much lighter and graceful four-poster beds.
