Desks and Writing Tables
Evolving from a simple writing box, the original desk was a small chest with sloping lid covering a storage compartment of writing materials and valuables. Over time, a stand was attached elevating the writing surface.
During the period of Louis XIV, furniture designers began placing this slant front desk box atop a chest of drawers or a cabinet. First appearing in the Queen Anne era, knee-holes were explored tremendously by Chippendale leading to many of the pedestal desk designs presented here.
